The Compass Sabbath School

I feel a deep interest in our Sabbath schools throughout the land, because I believe them to be instrumentalities of God for the education of our youth in the truths of the Bible. 2 Testimony Treasures 567.2

Here at The Compass Magazine, our mission is to help young people to construct a worldview based on the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy. To that end, we concur with Ellen White’s “deep interest” in the success of the Sabbath School enterprise, as this is the institution by which many of God’s people find their faith challenged, reshaped, and edified to better reflect the precepts of Christ.

Jerome Skinner, PhD (Old Testament)

Jerome Skinner, PhD (Religion)

To aid in this endeavor The Compass Magazine has begun a brand new initiative, The Compass Sabbath School which is a weekly online publication of supplemental content to the week’s Adult Sabbath School Lesson. Dr. Jerome Skinner will be our guide for this quarter (April – June 2017) as we study 1 and 2 Peter (also known as the Petrine epistles). Jerome Skinner, earned his Ph.D as an Old Testament scholar at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. He focuses on the Psalms and Wisdom literature and on practical Christianity. He is also active in following American Christianity and social issues. Dr. Skinner brings his unique perspective on the epistles of Peter by looking at the text through the lenses of the Old Testament and we trust that you will find his insights challenging, engaging, and most importantly faith-building.

Be sure to visit our website each Friday to read Dr. Skinner’s latest reflections and analysis of the lesson. In addition, be sure to visit the Sabbath School section of our website to review past lessons you may have missed. Finally, we want leave you with a couple more inspiring quotes from the pen of Ellen White, to encourage you to make a habit of studying the Sabbath School lesson on a daily basis and to attend and participate in your local Sabbath School.[1]

If I had an opportunity, I would speak to the students of every Sabbath school in the land, lifting up my voice in earnest appeal that they go to the word of God, seeking for truth and light. God has precious light to come to His people at this very time, and you should strive earnestly in your investigations to aim at nothing less than a thorough knowledge of every point of truth, that you may not be found in the day of God among those who have not lived by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Counsels on Sabbath School Work 31.2

As a means of intellectual training, the opportunities of the Sabbath are invaluable. Let the Sabbath school lesson be learned, not by a hasty glance at the lesson scripture on Sabbath morning, but by careful study for the next week on Sabbath afternoon, with daily review or illustration during the week. Thus the lesson will become fixed in the memory, a treasure never to be wholly lost. Education, 251, 252.
