The psalmist reminds us of the preeminent guiding value of Scripture when he declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps. 119:105, NASB). Perhaps if he were writing today, he might have employed the metaphor “Your Word is a compass for my journey.”
For centuries the compass has served humans faithfully in every form of travel. From the ancient maritime explorer searching for new continents to today’s trail hiker with a smartphone, it has reliably provided guidance and direction to one’s final destination.
It is a privilege to welcome you to The Compass Magazine, an e-magazine committed to pointing the reader to Scripture through thoughtful essays, timely and relevant news, and other important features unapologetically promoting an Adventist worldview to 21st-century voyagers.
For us the compass is indeed a worthy icon. Just as this valuable instrument has reoriented and reassured travelers through the literal storms of life, the Word directs the Christian through today’s spiritual perils. In a time of unprecedented social upheaval and cultural distraction, the believer will inevitably become spiritually disoriented without the guiding influence of the Word and its unwavering navigation toward “true north.” Recognizing this, the goal of The Compass Magazine is to provide “Biblical direction in a world of confusion.”
Today we hear increasingly restless voices announcing that “all things must change.” We witness the wayward emergent movements that, claiming fidelity to the Word, peddle their ancient sophistries repackaged as novel and innovative ideas. In short, we see the cumulative effect of unbiblical philosophies, attitudes, and cultural practices swaying multitudes away from the Bible’s teachings.
In contrast, The Compass Magazine will offer fresh Biblical perspectives on contemporary Christian experience and the rapidly changing landscape of the church without neglecting the cultural context. We will do so candidly yet unapologetically from an Adventist viewpoint. We will resist the current mood to diminish or water down sound doctrine. We will remember that present truth does not veer from scriptural foundations established by those who faithfully followed the Word’s guidance. Humbly yet soberly, standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before, we will welcome the challenges ahead inspired by their legacy, grounded in the foundational principles of Scripture, and committed to the certainty of our prophetic calling.
To that end we trust you will enjoy:
• In-depth, biblically sound articles on important topics
• Insightful commentary on events in the world and the church
• Resources to help you take an informed stance on issues
• A discussion community that upholds the Bible and the Adventist Church
It is our wish that you will be educated through the Word, encouraged in your faith, and empowered to speak out thoughtfully and courageously on the important issues facing the church today.
We invite you to explore the pages of thecompassmagazine.com as together we allow Scripture to set our course “as the needle to the pole.”
